CARTERSVILLE, GA and SEATTLE, WA, JANUARY 21, 2016 – One of Greenfield Advisors’ partners and a colleague won “Best Refereed Paper” from the Pacific Rim Real Estate Society.

Dr. Clifford Lipscomb, Director of Economic Research at Greenfield Advisors, worked with Dr. Andy Krause of the University of Melbourne on the soon-to-be-published paper, “Property-Level Real Estate Data: Processing Techniques and Documentation Review.” In the paper, the authors note that statistical analyses have become increasingly important for many in the industry, and therefore many worry about equations and data mining techniques. However, the success of these techniques depends on the quality of the underlying data. Therefore, the authors looked at how real estate professionals learn to acquire, clean, and prepare the large amounts of data needed for statistical analyses.

Property-level data creates some challenges that are often not covered very well in college courses or in journals and handbooks. Dr. Lipscomb and Dr. Krause take an expert’s views of issues such as un-standardized data and insufficient labeling and examine how well the data preparation process and analytical flow is documented in peer-reviewed journals.

“I’m honored to win this award, and I want to thank Dr. Krause for his partnership and collaboration on this paper,” said Dr. Lipscomb. “We started looking into these issues about three years ago when we noticed the shortage of professional guidance on this topic. Andy really spearheaded this effort and I look forward to working with him again.”

Dr. Lipscomb has been a part of Greenfield Advisors for 5 years and uses his economics and real estate background to lead a team of analysts and provide expert guidance in a wide range of topics, from contaminated property valuation to economic impact studies.

“I’m lucky to have a job where I can lead a strong team, but also take time to do research in the fields of study that I so enjoy,” Dr. Lipscomb said. “I enjoy the work we do with our clients, but to be recognized by my peers for my work is very gratifying.”
