In our new monthly blog feature, Greenfield Advisors Snapshot, we take a look at one of our employees who makes us the successful company we are today. Today we profile Dr. John Kilpatrick.

_____________

Dr. John Kilpatrick is the managing director at Greenfield Advisors. In the professional world, he is known for his research, preparation, and knowledge of real estate. He holds appraisal licenses in all 50 states and Washington D.C., is a USPAP instructor, and is a member of the ABA and the American Arbitration Association. But Dr. Kilpatrick is known around the office as someone always willing to answer questions and mentor others on staff.

What are some memorable projects for you?

I was the lead expert witness in the first (and to date, only) mortgage-backed security case to actually go to trial. We’ve also helped successfully settle over two dozen such cases to date, with client recoveries topping $20 billion.

What lessons have you learned over your career?

Excellence is a process, not a goal. You may have won the Super Bowl, but you need a better playbook before the opening game of the new season.

What made you choose your career path?

I’ve always been fascinated by real estate, finance, and technology, and particularly the intersection of all three.

Where did you grow up?

In the words of Jimmy Buffett, “growing older but not up!” (Although, technically the low country of South Carolina.)

What was your first job?

I was a night janitor in a hospital for two years.

What are your favorite ways to spend your free time?

For me it’s family, boating, and flying (I’m a private pilot)‌‌‌—‌‌pretty much in that order.

Tell us about your family.

I’ve been married 36 years with four kids, two dogs, two cats, and an ark-load of wildlife in the backyard.

What’s your favorite vacation spot?

I love Key West, Florida. Barcelona runs a very close second, and rural France is third.

What’s on your bucket list?

Mine is endless. I think up new adventures nearly every day. The next stop is a river cruise down the Danube.

What’s one habit you do on a daily basis?

I’m a news junkie. I can’t start the day without checking the overnight headlines.

Give us a few surprising facts about you that people may not know.

I played college rugby, and I was both a Red Cross water safety instructor and a scuba instructor in my 20s.
